A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot aged 16 months in 30% new French oak, the 2023 Château Maucaillou offers ripe red and black cherries, chocolaty herbs, graphite, and cedar pencil nuances on the nose. It's medium-bodied on the palate, with a ripe, supple, layered mouthfeel and enough tannins to warrant 3-4 years in the cellar. Drink bottles through 2043. Drink 2026-2043.

The 2023 Maucaillou has a light bouquet with brambly red fruit, undergrowth and light tea-leaf scents. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, fine acidity, but it lacks real complexity on the dry finish. Weirdly, I prefer the second label!
Pretty red fruits, incense, spice, and floral notes all emerge from the 2023 Château Maucaillou, a charming, forward, delicious Moulis that has terrific balance and good length. It's a charmer to drink over the coming 7-8 years or thereabout.
Flowers, cherries, licorice, currants, and tobacco come together in this round, soft, easy-to-like wine, with its creamy, soft-textured, chocolate-accented, cherry-filled finish.
About the producer
Owned by the négociant Dourthe, this Moulis property has 87 hectares of vines today (with 67 added by Philippe Dourthe since 1967). Managed and made by an expert team, the quality here is hardly surprising.
