Tasting notes
Vinfolio, Apr 2024

The 2023 vintage marks the final stage in Gloria’s conversion to organic farming. As ever, the estate has managed to retain its expressive style. The nose is open with aromas of sweet dark cherry and vanilla that fill the glass. The palate is similarly approachable with layers of ripe cassis, blackberry and wild herbs that carry their weight through to the finish. It is both charming and reliable – as ever from this stalwart Saint-Julien. The yields were 51hl/ha here, with the wine having a modest 13.3% alcohol. Blend: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc

Coming from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in 38% new barrels (the balance in second- and third-fill), the 2023 Château Gloria is a classic Saint-Julien with real purity and finesse. Ripe blue fruits, cherries, leafy tobacco, and spicy wood notes all shine on the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, soft, polished tannins, and considerable charm and accessibility. Drink this lovely Saint-Julien over the coming 15-20 years. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes. Drink 2026-2045.

The 2023 Gloria is a total delight. Medium in body and vibrant, with terrific energy, the 2023 is seriously impressive. It is easily one of the sleepers of this vintage. Blood orange, crushed flowers and cinnamon weave through a core of red-toned fruit. There's a fair amount of Merlot in the blend, which adds to the wine's open-knit character. What a total delight.

The 2023 Gloria has a well-defined bouquet with a mixture of red and blueberry fruit, crushed violet and peony, quite Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with finely tuned tannins, quite fresh and vibrant, not a powerful Saint-Julien but this has developed more clarity and nuance during its élevage. Very fine.

The modest Ch. Gloria was only created in the 1940s, when Henri Martin – a cooper – purchased some vines. With parcels dotted in amongst the region’s Classed Growths, it produces impressive wines. Today it's managed by Vanessa and Jean Triaud (Henri Martin’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law).
