Vinfolio, Apr 2024

Under the Cruse family this property has been on a firm upward trajectory – and the 2023 continues the trend. It’s a concentrated and dark-fruited wine, vibrant and expressive, combining freshness with its lush blackcurrant and tobacco leaf. There’s impressive power behind the fruit, with a firm tannic structure and mouth-watering acidity that fills the finish. In an appellation that provided mixed results in 2023, this is a standout value performer. Aged in 50% new oak with 13.83% alcohol and 3.66pH. Blend: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 2.5% Cabernet Franc, 2.5% Petit Verdot

The 2023 Château d’Issan is certainly a significant step up from the Blason this vintage. It has a well-defined nose with predominantly red berry fruit (redcurrant and wild strawberry), with light rose petal scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit laced with white pepper. I would have liked more length and breadth, given the vintage.

Fine tannins, well balanced, inky and powerful tempered by oyster shell salinity. Chalky tannins with touch of En Primeur austerity, well constructed, full of cocoa bean, cassis, liqourice root, classical balance, highly spiced, rose petals and blueberry, great quality. First time not to have Malbec in the main Issan wine since the purchase of the neighbouring estate Pontac Lynch in 2020. 50% new oak, 32hl/h yield.
