Tasting notes
The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is a powerful, incisive wine. Red cherry/plum fruit, herbs, leather, cedar, incense and licorice all develop in the glass. For the second consecutive year, I find Rancia marked by a strong and unmistakable vegetal quality that is not present in the other wines. The tannins here are also searing, even within the context of young Rancia. Both bottles I tasted were awkward. There are obviously some things that need to be addressed here.

The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia shows beautiful minerality with dusty notes of crushed limestone or flint. This is the wine's special signature, and it shines through in a warm vintage such as this. Rancia also offers an upfront quality of red and purple fruit tones. The 2020 vintage displays pretty concentration and richness with wild cherry and plum, but ultimately the wine leaves you with that elegant mineral sendoff. Rancia will require extra bottle age.
Castelnuovo Berardenga. 100% Sangiovese. Lustrous mid ruby. Seductive, lifted nose of raspberry with oak notes and minerally, stony notes. A little exotic almost. Succulent raspberry fruit with lots of gravelly tannins. Elegant and long. Doesn’t seem to be for the long haul, but I might be mistaken. Undeniably attractive now. (WS)
