The 2007 Chardonnay begins with touches of candle smoke and flint, fleshing out to quince, Meyer lemon peel, crushed stone and mushrooms. The palate is racy with loads of citrus and flinty notions and laser-like acidity, gaining amplitude, texture and flavor in the mouth and finishing long and energetic.

Hyde is said to be one of the best growers in Carneros. Vines aged 18-28 years on the eastern edge of AVA. Shallow loam over clay hardpan. Very interesting nose, a touch of cedar and resin. Powerful and broad. Plenty of spice and a slightly old-fashioned woody flavour. Still very fresh. Zesty and spicy on the long finish. Distinctive style. (JH)
