The 2020 Paveil de Luze has a cohesive, ripe and opulent bouquet that manages to retain control, revealing notes of black cherries, dates and marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, all counterbalanced by a fine bead of acidity. There's plenty of substance and a spicy finish—what this lacks in finesse, it makes up for in gusto. Give it time. This is a hidden gem. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
Cru bourgeois exceptionnel. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, on deep gravel. Yield 49 hl/ha. Aged for 12 months in French barrels, 30% new. 163,000 bottles. Scented (Margaux-style!). Sweet, flattering and easy to like. Not that long but with some interest. Loosely textured but with quite complex fruit, and enough tannin to see it through some evolution. (JR)
Clear quality, with depth to the black cherry and damson fruits, with fresher raspberry leaf, slate, cocoa bean and smoked earth. Touch of heat on the finish, this has plenty of personality, and does well in the line up - notably this is an upscore from last time I tasted it alongside classified estates.
