(made from a selection of the year's best lots): Vivid ruby. An assertively perfumed bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, potpourri and licorice. Becomes spicier with air and offers pliant black raspberry and blueberry flavors that expand on the back half. The spicy quality lingers on the sweet, persistent finish, which shows very good clarity. This wine has the depth to age but there's nothing to get in the way of immediate drinking.

Displaying a deep ruby/garnet hue, the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Etienne Gonnet offers more garrigue and licorice in a lighter style than I expected. Usually this is a more serious rendition of the regular cuvee, but the 2009 possesses the same weight and texture as the traditional offering. Dark ruby with some development at the rim. Already quite a complex nose with garrigue notes. Lots of sweet fruit but lots of charm and even a certain amount of transparency too. This is made with a light touch and is highly successful. Just a little fine tannin on the end but no alcohol excess. (JR)
