The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from 1.32 hectares of vine in the lieu-dit of Les Champs Traversins. Matured in 30% new oak, it has a fragrant bouquet of red berry fruit laced with bergamot tea and light forest floor scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that impart more corpulence than Lamarche’s Premier Crus, exerting a gentle grip toward the finish. Very harmonious in style, this should drink well for the next 15 years, possibly more.
A riper nose reflects notes of poached plum, red currant, violet and a plethora of spice suggestions. The supple and relatively forward mid-palate of the moderately dense flavors immediately tighten up on the impressively complex and persistent finish that is shaped by a notably firm tannic spine that will require extended patience to resolve. I like the vibrancy and this is really quite good.

Today run by the fourth-generation Nicole Lamarche, this property (previously known as Domaine François Lamarche) is firmly among the best in Burgundy. The Vosne-Romanée estate is most famous for its monopole Grand Cru La Grande Rue.
