Drink 2028-2050, Vinfolio, Nov 2023

Lamarche’s Clos de Vougeot comes from two plots on opposite sides of the vineyard – one near the château, to the northwest, and one on the southeastern side – giving a complete representation of this Grand Cru. It’s such a totally different wine to the other Grands Crus, and an atypical Clos Vougeot – distinctly made with Nicole Lamarche’s touch. It’s intensely floral, like burying your nose in a stunning bouquet of roses and violets, but behind this is the vibrancy of crushed raspberries. There’s such suppleness to the fruit, a sweeping soft texture, undulating as waves of flavour wash over the palate. A graceful Clos Vougeot.

Moderate wood sets off cooler and more restrained aromas of mostly red currant, humus and newly turned earth. I very much like the gorgeous texture of the rich and caressing medium-bodied flavors that display focused power on the moderately austere, firm and built-to-age finale that delivers strikingly good length. Lovely. Drink 2032+

A lighter ruby colour. Moderately dense strawberry and raspberry pastilles on the nose. The Clos de Vougeot seems on the raw side because more youthful. The same fruit profile appears on the palate, just a little more tannic. Fair acidity and length.

Domaine Nicole Lamarche owns just over three-quarters of a hectare of the Clos de Vougeot. Although the vines in Petit Maupertuis have been rented out in a sharecropping agreement, she demonstrates here that the mature vines (40 – 50 years) are still capable of making a delicious Clos de Vougeot, with its pleasantly forward cherry and pomegranate fruit aroma touched with an almost salty mineral note, spice and a touch of lavender. The texture is silky and elegant, with supple tannins and a good balance between the fresh acidity and the extract.
