Tasting notes
Bright, dark, healthy red. Distinctly dark aromas of kirsch, blackberry, raspberry, menthol and licorice, complicated by a mocha nuance and lifted by a mineral component. At once silky and penetrating, conveying a medicinal cast along with sexy sweetness to its intense, fresh dark fruit, spice, herb, mocha and mineral flavors. Here the tannins are sweeter and very well integrated but a bit dustier than those of the '86, even if the wine's distinctly youthful fruit outlasts the tannins on the aftertaste. A very refined and satisfying Cabernet with a sophisticated texture and terrific breadth. Finishes classically dry.

One of the most gracious and polished wines in this tasting, the 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is laced with bright red berries, spices, licorice, tobacco and smoke. The flavors remain lively throughout, but the wine's mid-weight structure suggests it is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years. What a beautiful and unexpected surprise the 1987 has turned out to be.
