A jeweled red/ruby color, the 2021 Rosso Di Montalcino needs air, opening with a bit of elevated volatile aromas before revealing notes of cherry candies, pressed roses, and licorice. Medium-bodied, it has ripe tannins and a nice primary profile, with an easygoing nature. It’s going to be a versatile wine for casual drinking over the next few years. I continue to be impressed with the direction that Bernardino Sani and his team at Argiano are headed in, both in the vineyard and in the winery. As I noted in last year’s report, stylistically, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the estate has moved away from the use of barrique in the production of their Sangiovese (now only used for their Cabernet Sauvignon of Solengo). The wines are certainly beginning to take on a fresher style, while they are still maintaining clean winery practices.

The Argiano 2021 Rosso di Montalcino shows raspberry tart and strawberry shortbread on first nose. This is a simple but elegant wine that gives you exactly what you want from a Rosso with an exceptionally easy-drinking style. Aged briefly in cement and large oak casks, there is iris flower, almond and forest berry backed by fine, chalky tannins. This is the spirit of Rosso (in a 39,000-bottle release).
Woodland herbs and berries come together with sweet smoke and hints of shaved cedar as the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino blossoms in the glass. This soothes with its soft textures and mineral-tinged wild berry fruits, all guided by juicy acidity. A tart tinge lingers through the finish as the 2021 tapers off spicy, long yet remarkably fresh.
