Slightly hazy green-tinged yellow. Ineffable scents of lemon zest, anise, white truffle, menthol and chalk dust. Pure but painfully backward, with penetrating acidity giving precision but also a bitter edge to the flavors of lemon zest and powdered stone complicated by fresh mushroom and spices. Forget about this one in your cellar. Finishes with outstanding cut and salinity, and a lingering note of gingerbread.

The 2014 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru, from vines on the east side of the hill, has a well defined, phenolic, beeswax and dried honey-scented bouquet that has a little more intensity than its peers. Picked on October 1, it has a little more richness and that comes through on the palate. Although it has a high level of malolactic, the acidity is not sharp and there is a lovely dab of lemongrass enlivening the long and tender finish. This is a well crafted, charming Corton-Charlemagne.
