Tasting notes
Made with Merlot, or one of the more challenged grapes during this moment of climate change, the Marchesi Antinori 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Guado al Tasso Cont'Ugo starts off in stainless steel for fermentation on skins (at lower temperatures). Batches are sent to barrique for secondary fermentation, and a final blend is created from various parts before going into second-year barrique. It is a lot to take in, with ripe fruit, bramble, cooked cherry, big intensity and alcohol (at 14.5%), chalky tannins and some lingering dryness. This vintage is rather monotone. A total of 145,000 bottles were made.

An inky red/purple color, the 2021 Cont'Ugo offers a gorgeous nose with pure, ripe aromas of red apple skin, vanilla bean, mocha, sweet tobacco, and sandalwood. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and ample, with very nice mouthwatering acidity and mineral undercurrents despite having such plushness of fruit. Delicate notes of dark chocolate on the finish balance this out nicely and add lift to this pillowy wine. It’s approachable now but will benefit from time to show off its more Mediterranean notes and will provide an ample drinking window over the next 15 or more years. There is a lot for lovers of Guado al Tasso to be excited about this year. With a brand new, state-of-the-art cellar and winery, this will be a destination worth visiting when traveling to Bolgheri. Though not new, they also have a restaurant on the estate open for lunch and dinner. While I was not able to dine there this trip, they produce their own Salumi from animals harvested on the estate and will absolutely be on my itinerary to check out in the near future.
The 2021 Cont'Ugo (Merlot) is packed with inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice and cloves. This sumptuous Merlot will drink well right out of the gate. It is the archetype of a Maremma red.
