Rounding off Ettore Germano's varied expression from Serralunga d'Alba is the evolved and sophisticated 2011 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito. This wine is already creeping into its drinking window, and I expect it will continue to improve with more time in the bottle. It shows a light garnet color with pretty ruby highlights. The aromas are stitched together in a pretty and fine-tuned embroidery. The finish is a bit bitter and dry, however, and is marked by granite or stony flavors. Maceration times are extended up to 60 days on this Riserva, and the finished wine ages in oak for three years.

Sergio Germano's 2011 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito is a good choice for drinking now and over the next few years, before the fruit fades too much further. The sweet tobacco, cherry, anise, leather and dried flowers are nicely delineated. Soft, silky tannins add to the wine's open-knit, alluring personality. The 2011 is an attractive, mid-weight wine, but I have to think a little less oak influence would be hugely beneficial here.

Tasted blind. Serralunga d’Alba. Maturing and only mid ruby with orange rim. Spicy and really backward on the nose. Very slow and backward on the palate too. Supple and elegant and firmly closed with fine but mouth-filling tannins. A sleeping giant. (WS)

Cask sample. 1 ha parcel within the Lazzarita vineyard at 330 m. Will be in large oak cask for a total of 36 months. Palish ruby with broad orange-tinged rim. Lifted sweet leafy concentrated strawberry nose. Amazing balance between concentrated fruit, integrated acidity and ripe dense tannins. (WS)
