Serralunga d'Alba. Deep ruby. Gorgeously deep red cherry fruit with just a touch of sweet oak spice and a darker more savoury note – not quite liquorice. Very dry, firm, fine almost powdery tannins. Elegant and very dry on the finish. (JH)

Serralunga d’Alba. Youthful mid ruby. Subdued, spicy nose. Ripe strawberry fruit on the palate matched by a perfect dose of acidity and tactile, chewy tannins. Spectacular tannic grip on the finish. (WS)

With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2011 Barolo Margheria benefits from luminous western and southern exposures. The heavy, dense soils of the Margheria vineyard have helped to shape an opulent expression of Nebbiolo that boasts dark color and concentration. Sweet aromas of dried blackberry and cherry lift from the glass, followed by exotic spice, balsam herb and toasted espresso bean. This a Barolo with very broad shoulders that will evolve slowly over the next decade.

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Exciting ripe cherry nose that pulls you in and succulent, juicy elegant fruit supercharged with chewy, bittersweet tannins. Wonderful stuff that can be approached with caution – ie with food. (WS)
