This is a big wine to begin with, but the 2011 Barolo Enrico VI is among the biggest yet. The vintage heat has conspired to further enrich and concentrate the dark and structured fruit that characterizes the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto. The bouquet is spicy and bold with blackberry, dried cherry, tar and licorice. In the mouth, the wine offers bold structure, tight tannins and a distinct sense of nobility. This Barolo gives you a lot to chew on both figuratively and literally.

Castiglione Falletto. Deep ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Earthy, immediate nose with fruit-cake notes. Ripe, charred fruit that has a little depth to it and with quite chewy tannins on the finish. Good acidity, but the opulent ripeness clearly reflects the hot year. (WS)
Mid crimson. Low-key ripe nose. Lots of mulch mixed with cough-medicine herbs. Interesting! But a bit brutal on the finish. It certainly makes an impact. Needs time. Uncomfortable at the moment because of its dry tannins but it’s admirably clean on the finish. (JR)
The 2011 Barolo Enrico VI is the sweetest and most floral of the 2011s. Rose petal, cinnamon, mint, sweet red cherries and kirsch meld together in a supple, expressive Barolo that will offer a long and broad window of pure drinking pleasure. This is an unusually open Villero from Cordero di Montezemolo. At the same time, there is plenty of nuance and subtlety in the glass.
