Tasting notes
100% Sangiovese. Generous fruitcake, stewed fruit, chocolate chip, heady and opulent style. Floury tannic feel, smooth body and dry savoury finish that has a lingering cocoa and black cherry flavour. (RH)

The 2001 San Martino, the top Sangiovese selection, is quite dark for a wine from this variety, spicy, penetrating, and chocolatey in aroma, firm and rich in its structure and texture, intense and velvety on the finish. It will easily drink well for another dozen years. Importer: Classic Wine Imports, West Roxbury, MA; tel. (800) 362-4429
100% Sangiovese, 18 months in 100% new French oak (Allier and Troncais), six months in bottle. Solid, vegy, autumnal nose. Tingly life and acidity – comfortable. Like old slippers next to the Cabernet Franc from the same producer. Lively. (JR)
