Score 87/100 · Drink 2020-2022, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Dec 2020

The organic Grattamacco 2018 Bolgheri Vermentino is a little closed and slow to open. There is a note of struck match that follows to subtle tones of orchard fruit, pear and grapefruit. To the palate, the wine is more giving, especially in terms of texture. This is a lean-bodied result, but the fruit wraps around the palate with soft and silky intensity. Dusty mineral notes appear on the close, but that flinty aroma never fully disappears (and I had just one sample). This wine is made from 33-year-old Vermentino vines, some of the oldest in the appellation, and today production is 13,000 bottles.

Grattamacco

Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
