Serralunga d’Alba. Mid ruby. Sour cherry with a pinch of gingerbread. Quite sweet and ripe yet supple on the palate and with plenty of ripe acidity to keep it going. Can probably age, but already approachable now. Great tannic bite adds contrast on the finish. (WS)

Taking on more mineral character, the 2019 Barolo Margheria lifts with crushed rocks, white pepper, and red cherry. It has a bit more linear drive with its spine of acidity and offers notes of blood orange, grenadine, and dried roses. It is refreshing with angular tannins and has a long finish. Hold 3-5 years and drink 2026-2046.

The 2019 Barolo Margheria is more savory/mineral in profile than the other Barolos in the range, with less overt fruit but plenty of persistence. In recent years, Giampaolo Pira has found a way to tame the formidable tannins here, and that is very much evident in this gorgeous, expressive Barolo.
