With fruit from La Morra, the Renato Corino 2017 Barolo Arborina shows thick shadings of spice, toasted hazelnut and peppercorn over a dense core of black fruit. Those oak influences are a bit much, especially in a hot-vintage expression that shows a 15% alcohol content as this bottle does. You get fruit tannins compounded by oak tannins.

The 2017 Barolo Arborina is a big, dramatic wine. Super-ripe red fruit, mint, white pepper and spice are all amplified in a Barolo that takes all the signatures of this well-known La Morra cru and turns up the dial. As always, the Arborina has some nervousness in the tannin, but historically that is one of the things that has helped this wine age well. There is certainly no shortage of character here.
