Score 87/100 · Drink 2016, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2016

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières from Comtes-Lafon is the first time that it has been bottled under DIAM. It has a more topical-tinged bouquet than Henri Boillot's Meursault Genevières, with scents of butterscotch and acacia complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with vibrant acidity. Lighter in style than other Genevrières, it does not quite deliver the complexity that the nose promises and I would be inclined to drink this in its youth rather than grace it with bottle age. This showing did not tally with the barrel sample that I tasted and I wonder whether the alternative closure might have had something to do with that, since this was not the only 2013 from Dominique Lafon to show below the quality I was expecting. Tasted May 2016.

(ready to bottle): Bright, light yellow. Knockout nose combines lime, orange peel and minerals. Distinctly tactile, even a bit phenolic, with penetrating acidity giving the citrus and stone flavors terrific cut. The crop level here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare, which Lafon described as typical of the vintage.

Very floral and herbal and true. Some generosity. Rich and tight. Fine and refined. (JR)

(tasted from a new barrel that had finished its secondary fermentation): Sexy aromas of orange oil, clove and oak char. Concentrated and silky, with impressive density of texture for the vintage and noteworthy sucrosite cut by racy acidity. Finishes with outstanding length and lift and palate-staining intensity. I've only tasted one component but this wine holds out considerable potential. (The 2013 Boucheres and Poruzots had not yet started their malos.)
