The 2014 Jean Faure is certainly a level up over the last two vintages, although I aver that it does not reach its full potential. It has a focused blackberry and loam bouquet that reveals touches of dark chocolate with time. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh on the entry, delivering firm tannins and light minty notes. It falls short on the compact finish, which doesn’t fulfill the promise and doesn’t quite kick on. This is certainly a decent Saint-Émilion, but it comes across rather conservative vis-à-vis its peers.

The 2014 Jean Faure is a powerful, authoritative wine. Mocha, savory herbs, mint and spiced notes provide aromatic topnotes. Plump and juicy on the palate, the 2014 has enough fruit and underlying tannin to drink well for at least a handful of years. This is an exotic wine with considerable Cabernet Franc aromatics, and yet it is quite striking.

Dark crimson. Very rich and ripe on the nose and then on the palate a little sour. Shortage of fruit in the middle. Drying end. Dry, grating tannins. (JR)

A bold, dark wine, the 2014 Jean Faure opens with distinct Cabernet Franc-inflected aromatics. Dark cherry, plum, spice and leather flow as this beautifully resonant, ample St.-Emilion shows off its considerable charms. The 2014 finishes with notable substance and structure, both of which add to its undeniable appeal.
