The 2016 Le Pavillon de Léoville-Poyferré has some flatness on the nose, lethargic black fruit that needs to pull its socks up. The palate is quite sweet on the entry, with blackberry and a little prune. Perhaps just some overripe fruit entered that vat here. Not bad, but it lacks real complexity and charm. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind. Perfumed. Very dry. Bit of an old, dry stick. Hard and a bit green. (JR)

The estate has also turned out a fabulous second wine, The 2016 Pavillon de Leoville Poyferre is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It’s a ripe, fleshy, full-bodied beauty that has a wealth of fruit and texture as well as classy notes of blackberries, cedar, forest floor, and lead pencil shavings. Layered, fleshy yet also elegant, with soft tannins, it has real character and I suspect will keep for 15-20 years.

A cornucopia of ripe black cherries and blackberries here, married to full, supple and beautifully integrated tannins and just enough acidity to prevent it tipping over into sweetness. Long, silky finish. Second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré. A blend of 61 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 27 per cent merlot, eight per cent petit verdot and four per cent cabernet franc. Drink or hold.
