The 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello is a dark, potent wine. Black cherry, plum, leather, menthol, licorice, lavender and dried herbs all come together in this heady, strapping Barolo. The 2016 packs a pretty huge punch, but it is also elegant and quite distinctive.

Only made in the best years, the Prunotto 2016 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Colonnello shows classic lines, good sharpness and delicate aromas. The only thing lacking is intensity, and the rather subdued personality of this wine is reflected across the portfolio of new releases from this important estate. The wine gives a lot, but you end up wanting more. The delivery of fruit is simple and rather of fact with light structure and nice freshness. It will hopefully flesh out with more time in the bottle.

Monforte d'Alba. Mid ruby. Deep, balsamic and stony with top notes of red fruit and sweet raspberry and dark spices. Gorgeous, supple fruit on the palate with rich, coating tannins sticking but never overwhelming the fruit. Huge depth of fruit but remains poised and collected. Spectacular balance. An immensely pretty wine. (WS)
