The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is redolent of black cherry, sage, tobacco, menthol and licorice. It is the most tannic and brooding of the Diamond Creek 2001s. Readers lucky enough to own it are in for a treat. It’s a superb wine from this era.

I only had a chance to taste one Diamond Creek Cabernet, which is still a young wine. Produced from their 8-acre parcel of vines high on Diamond Creek Mountain, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with abundant notes of blueberries, black raspberries, graphite, earth and burning embers. Rich, medium to full-bodied, pure and dense, it possesses a Bordeaux-like personality as well as tremendous up-side potential. With another decade of cellaring, it should merit a score in the mid-nineties, and last for 15-20+ years. Tel. (707) 942-6926
