Tasting notes
The 2000 Tokaji Aszu 5-Puttonyos comes from a warm year, so the acidity is comparatively lower at around 8.4 grams per liter. Although the bouquet displays good intensity, it does not possess the complexity of either the 2005 or 2006. It offers scents of orange peel, quince, grass clippings, marmalade and a slight yeasty note. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle opening. The acidity certainly makes a difference after the 2005 and 2006, rendering it more approachable but slightly less thrilling because it does not have the same degree of tension. Still, there are plenty of dried mango, dried fig, marmalade and spice notes to enjoy, while the finish is harmonious, if perhaps just a little shorter than expected. Drink now-2025. Oremus is one of the most well-known wineries in Tokaji. I visited their winery in the village of Tolcsva, where their 115-hectare vineyard is located. This includes prestigious first class parcels that belonged to the Rakoczi and Szirmay families in the 18th century. And there was a sense of opulence at Oremus that I rarely encountered elsewhere in Tokaj. It not only infused their impressive portfolio, but was translated in their splendid tasting room, furnished with plush antique furniture more suited to a Bordeaux chateau. Of course, that has no bearing on the wines themselves, which are generally top quality and some of the purest Tokaj wines that you will find in the region. Notes of grilled pineapple, grapefruit and honey in the nose. Creamy and fat in the mouth, broad and enveloping in its honey, vanilla and grilled citrus character, this contrasts strikingly with the dynamic play of acids of the 1999s. Pungently spicy, with a hint of caramel in the finish. 1 star.
