Some very attractive, toasty oak and bright, ripe dark berries that deliver a fresh and vibrant impression. The palate has a smooth array of vibrant, succulent red plums and berries in a ripe, plush and dense style A blend of 52 per cent merlot and 48 per cent cabernet sauvignon. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Monteil d’Arsac feels a little stilted on the nose. This Haut-Médoc does not shine like its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannin, a touch of sour, dark cherries and a tarry, tobacco finish that is a tad too dry for my liking. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London.

52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot. Some varnish aromas on the nose, and a sour sort of palate that suggests too much acetic character here. Structurally well balanced, but the flavour profile walks on the wild side. (RH)
