Score 90/100 · Drink 2018-2028, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2018

The 2011 Barolo Castellero is slightly more rustic and rough around the edges compared to the 2012 vintage. In other words, this wine has a more pronounced wild side. You do get lots of ripe fruit here with dark layers of dried raspberry, cassis, plum and spice. Lighter, more ethereal notes of ash, licorice and anise seed appear at the back. The wine is aged in botte grande for three years.

Barolo. Very pale garnet. Slightly salty(!) but zesty and focused. A sort of lunchtime Barolo. Not the most powerful but very nicely balanced. For relatively early drinking. (JR)

Orange peel, white pepper, smoke, dried cherry, dried rose petal and anise are some of the notes that flesh out in the 2011 Barolo Castellero. Open-knit and expressive - as most wines of the vintage are - the Castellero nevertheless possesses that firm spine of tannin that is so typical of this high-altitude Monforte site. The 2011 can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring but also has enough acidity and tannin to drink well for a number of years.

Barolo. Just mid ruby with glowing orange rim. Impression of ripeness and yet herbal more than fruity on the nose. Tangy cherry fruit palate that still needs to overcome the compact tannins. A little hard for the moment, but with a promising, fragrant finish. (WS)
