Deep crimson with rusting rim. Delia Viader pointed out that especially strict selection was needed in this difficult-to-ripen, over-criticised year. Aromatic, mineral-laden – you can almost smell the stones that apparently had to be moved to make way for the vines. Neither too thick nor too alcoholic. Very lively, racy and dancing. This blend of 65 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 35 per cent Cabernet Franc is a lively, well nuanced crimson. Neat, leafily scented, mineral-flavoured, notably smooth-textured, inky but gentle, this is subtle stuff. (JR)
This restrained 1998 (a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Cabernet Franc) recalls a Medoc claret. The wine unfolds gracefully on the palate to reveal flavors of black currants, tar, earth, creamy vanillin, and subtle oak.
