Tasting notes
Made under the celebrated winemaker Giacomo Tachis (who would leave Fattoria le Pupille in 1995), this is another beautiful wine that emphasizes general abundance and concentration. The 1993 Saffredi is very similar in taste profile to the 1992, although this vintage carries a little more textural richness. It offers dark fruit and blackberry, and the quality of those flavors remains quite fresh, at least during the initial part of the tasting. The mouthfeel is precise and focused overall. It must be said, however, that the brightness of the aromas fade as the wine opens in the glass, and you get some smoky or sweaty notes with time.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 7% Alicante. 1993 was a regular year. A sunny spring with only a few downpours. A hot, but above all stable summer. Harvest between 18 September and 12 October. 9,500 bottles produced. Bright, mid-blackish ruby. Rather a serious nose. Real weight to this wine that is still going strong though tastes as though it may not have changed very much. Again, there is the charm of ripe fruit here. Great cleanliness but just a slightly dry finish. Was this rather a dry year? Admirable persistence. (JR)
The 1993 is a beguiling, graceful Saffredi laced with plums, prunes, wild herbs, spices and licorice. It possesses gorgeous inner perfume and freshness that frame the fruit through to the elegant, impeccable finish. The French oak confers a level of textural richness and sweetness, but is beautifully balanced in this vintage. At the same time, the 1993 could have been a truly great wine with a more restrained approach to cooperage.
Tuscany. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 7% Alicante. 1993 was a normal year: sunny springtime with only a few downpours, a hot but, above all, stable summer! The harvest was carried out between 18 September and 12 October. 9,500 bottles produced. Still quite dark crimson with even a hint of blue. A certain dustiness on the nose like the 1990 and pretty sandpapery tannins but lots of vigour on the palate. Quite a charmer. Very good for current drinking. Very warm and Maremma-like. Bright fruit. Comforting. (JR)
