The 2019 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch comes from the Sonoma Coast and has a savory, complex, nuanced, and medium-bodied style as well as notes of mulberries, roasted herbs, and crushed stone. It's one of the more tannic, structured wines in the lineup and is going to require a solid 2-3 years of bottle age.
Kutch's warmest site on sandstone and shale at 1,010 feet above the fog line and facing south 3.5 miles from the ocean. Three days before native-yeast fermentation of 75% whole-cluster berries. Foot-trodden. Aged for 15 months. 100% used French oak. 325 cases produced. Mid garnet. Sweet with light cough-lozenge spices. Light, fresh and a little chewy. Very much California rather than Burgundy. But very pure and well made. (JR)
The 2019 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is one of the most savory wines in this range, as it so often is. Dried flowers, mint, pine, spice and cedar lend striking aromatic presence to this mid-weight, finely-sculpted Pinot. Bright acids and beams of supporting tannin lend shape and energy. The McDougall is a Pinot that emphasizes savory complexity, drive and tension, while the fruit lies more in the background.
