Tasting notes
The medium ruby-colored (with some garnet at the edge) 1997 Cuvee du Plessy exhibits an herbaceous, peppery nose with notes of bacon fat, in a soft, round, perfumed style. This evolved, open-knit, soft Cote Rotie will be drinkable upon release and should be consumed within its first 5-6 years of life. Barge was complaining about too many massive Cote Roties when I saw him in October, 1998. His Cuvee du Plessy (made primarily from Cote Blonde fruit, with some Viognier in the blend) is unquestionably one of the more elegant, aromatic expressions of the appellation. Barge calls it his cuvee du plaisir. Importer: a Christopher Cannan Selection, Europvin USA, Watertown, MA; tel. (617) 924-7620

Good fresh deep color. Framboise, bacon fat and a whiff of flowers on the nose. Juicy and leanish, with decent acidity and complexity, but a bit withdrawn today. Finishes with light, dusty tannins and modest length. Seems a bit flaccid.
