Soft cherry red. Like the Arborina, has the dry dusty woodland aroma, giving very little away. Really withheld but, like the Arborina, there's a harmony and fine structure, the tannins even more fine grained and refined. Some savoury liquorice as it opens up. Great potential for refined elegance. (JH)

The 2008 Barolo Vecchie Vigne, from and old-vine parcel in Giachini, wraps around the palate with lovely depth and roundness. Plums, black cherries, mint, tar and cloves are some of the many notes that flesh out in this expressive, layered Barolo. The 2008 isn't quite as big as some previous years, but like all the wines in this range, it is super-refined and polished from start to finish. The 70% new barrels give the 2008 quite a bit of volume and depth.
Saturated ruby-red. Captivating aromas of deep black raspberry, licorice and menthol. Chocolate-covered cherry on the attack, then sweet and seamless in the mouth, with high-pitched, distinctly redder flavors of raspberry and cherry. At once powerful and elegant, boasting excellent mid-palate definition. Very young but complete Barolo, finishing with firm but suave tannins, terrific lift and compelling aromatic persistence.
