Tasting notes
Vinfolio, Apr 2023

From plots mainly on the plateau, Pichon Baron sometimes has a reputation for being muscular – and, while in 2022 it is certainly broader than Pichon Comtesse, this is far from a hard, firm expression of the year. It has a lushness to the fruit, with bright and freshness that makes for a truly elegant 2022. The tannins are powder-fine, with a sweetness softening the dark cassis fruit (thanks to 70% new oak). Pure and bright with impressive freshness, this is a refined and polished 2022.

The 2022 Pichon Baron has a bright and fresh bouquet, much more floral in style than its peers, with violet-infused black and blueberry fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, with what feels like a "natural/low SO2" element on the entry. Just a bit sweet 'n sour, though undeniably quite polished and long on the finish. Not quite as good a bottle as last year, but still a great wine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Divine fruit intensity: deep, juicy, well-defined blackcurrant fruit with smoke and graphite complexity. Long finish with strong stony intensity – true to type, with early accessibility. (RH)

Aromas of sweet dark berries and cherries mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, pencil shavings and licorice introduce the 2022 Pichon-Longueville Baron, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's deep, dense and lively, with terrific concentration, sweet tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Integrated and serious, this hints at the lavishness inherent to the vintage, while remaining classic and controlled. This blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot was bottled in June.
