Vinfolio, Apr 2023

The 2022 Carruades de Lafite has wonderfully deep aromas, rich with purple fruit tones – plum and blueberry – and a floral, violet character. The fruit is decisively fresh, with great clarity and piquancy. The palate offers more pure, vibrant, concentrated blackcurrant fruit – but it’s so juicy on the mid-palate, with the wine’s detailed tannins building structure on the appealingly bitter finish. Elegant and lifted, a superb second wine to match a truly Grand Vin this year. Blend: 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot

The 2022 Carruades de Lafite has a classic Pauillac-like bouquet with blackberry, graphite and sous-bois scents, a little more restrained than the d'Armailhac, gaining clarity with each swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, quite sapid in the mouth, cohesive with a dash of black pepper on the finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

The 2022 Carruades de Lafite has turned out nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully understated bouquet of raspberries, cherries and cedary pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, suave and velvety palate that's supple and lively, built around refined, powdery tannins.

The 2022 Carruades De Lafite is beautifully balanced and has that classic Lafite elegance in its aromatics and overall mouthfeel. Sweet cassis, violets, spring flowers, and cedar notes all emerge on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied, has a balanced, elegant texture, and beautifully integrated tannins. As with the Grand Vin, it brings ample richness and depth while holding onto a beautiful sense of freshness. Drink this brilliant second wine over the coming two decades.
