Vinfolio, Apr 2023

A blend of 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, this is a superb 2022 from a gem of a property in the heart of Saint-Emilion. The nose is subtle and nuanced, while the mid-palate is flamboyant and concentrated – with layers of liquorice and black cherry that build up on palate and last right through to the finish. It’s hard to remember a Croix de Labrie with such intensity and depth.

Deep purple-hued, the 2022 Château Croix De Labrie is based on 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Cabernet Franc that's from a handful of sites of mostly cooler limestone soils. Cassis, violets, darker chocolate, graphite, and spicy oak all emerge from this pure, concentrated, beautifully balanced and full-bodied 2022. It’s relatively inward and tight at the moment, yet it still blossoms with air and has so much to love. I would hide bottles for 4-6 years, and it should cruise over the following two decades.

The 2022 Croix de Labrie has a well-defined bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, touches of pencil shaving and scorched earth, opening with confidence in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. Plush and sensual, there are no hard edges here with a silky, cassis and spice box-tinged finish. This is a lovely, caressing Saint-Émilion to drink over the next 15 years.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Croix de Labrie bursts from the glass with vivacious notes of red currant jelly, baked black plums, blueberry compote, and tilled soil, leading to hints of unsmoked cigars, bay leaves, and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate is light on its feet with impressive tension and loads of bright red and black berry layers, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend this year is 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Cabernet Franc.
