Bright red-ruby color. Aromas of crushed blackberry, licorice and bitter chocolate, with some obvious sweet oak notes. Densely packed, juicy and penetrating, with dark berry flavors framed by lively acidity. Finishes with serious dusty, building tannins, hints of bitter chocolate and leather, and excellent length. This was a bit unrefined compared to two examples of Pommard Rugiens I tasted alongside it but richer and fruitier, and not a bit dry.

The 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots has darker fruit than the 2014 Rugiens, with blackberry and briary joining the wild strawberry aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with pointed acidity, blackberry and raspberry fruit, linear and a little stemmy towards the finish. Not bad, although I would like to see more cohesion by the time it's in bottle.
(vinified with one-third whole clusters): Deep red with ruby highlights. Very reduced on the nose, hinting at dark raspberry; the compact, dark, humid clay always results in early reduction, says Saouma. Chewy and dense on the palate, with fresh, deep blackberry and licorice flavors complemented by a distinct bitter chocolate component. Finishes with serious but ripe tannins.
