Black cherry, plum, menthol, new leather and cedar are some of the notes that open up in the 2013 Volnay 1er Cru. Here the flavors are a bit darker than they are in some of the other wines, while the overall impression is of fleshiness buffered by the invigorating freshness of the year. There is a beautiful sense of poise to the Volnay 1er in 2013.

Bright mid crimson. Much, much denser than the village wine with attractive bitter-cherry notes. Lots of acidity and tannin but fruit too. (JR)

Nicely saturated deep red. Dark berries and flowers on the nose, with a mineral component contributing verve. Juicy black fruit and floral flavors are dense and fresh, with a chalky quality giving firmness to the soil-driven, firmly tannic finish. This reminded me a bit of a Margaux wine! (I found the basic village Volnay a bit leathery and dry.)

The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru is a blend of two parcels in the lieux-dits, Les Pitures Dessus and Mitans, that can sometimes include fruit from young vines elsewhere, though not in 2013. It has a clean and pure, perfumed black cherry and wild-strawberry bouquet with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, good acidity and with just a touch of sinew on the finish that should soften by the time of bottling. I would like to see this put on just a little more flesh by the time of bottling.
