Tasting notes
The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a sensual nose that unlike many of its peers is complex and not overbearing. Lovely and pure red fruit intermingles with sous-bois and mulch-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, very cohesive and smooth, gently building towards a sapid finish. This is a finely crafted Volnay among the best tasted in this horizontal. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is elegant this year, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries, orange rind and a deft framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with powdery tannins and good energy, displaying good focus and structural finesse.
Barrel sample. Rich and dark fruited, almost a little charry in a stony/mineral way rather than in an oaky way as Lafon doesn’t use much new oak on the premiers crus. Finely textured tannins adding to that mineral quality that becomes almost chalky on the finish. (JH)
