The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru has a nuanced nose with citrus peel, pressed white flowers, white chalk and a hint of orange blossom. Beautifully controlled, the oak is well integrated. The palate is well-defined with a subtle reduction on the entry, fine acidity, quite sappy and focused towards the tensile finish. Just a hint of grapefruit emerges on the lingering aftertaste. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.

The most reserved of these three bottled premiers crus is the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée, a medium to full-bodied, elegantly satiny wine evocative of pear, waxy citrus rind, fresh bread, pastry cream and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a penetrating finish, this will demand a little patience.
One wine that has the potential to surpass its 2017 counterpart is Pillot's 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée, a stunning cuvée that soars from the glass with scents of pear, clear honey, iodine and warm pastry. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, it's concentrated and racy, with a layered core and a long, precise finish. This will be worth a special effort to seek out.
