Score 89+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous
Healthy medium red. Pretty, perfumed, more aromatic nose combines raspberry, redcurrant, cherry, earth and tobacco. Smaller scaled and less expansive than either of the 1996 or 1997 vintages, but vinous and firm, with sound acidity. The slightly drying tannins currently cut off the wine's finishing fruit, however. Rinaldi says this wine will soften during its last year in barrel. Yet I can't help but wonder whether leaving this wine in wood for another year will risk losing too much of the wine youthful fruit.
