The 2014 Barolo Margheria is a very distinctive expression of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d'Alba. The bouquet offers a strong balsamic signature with eucalyptus oil and rosemary essence. Those cooling and soothing aromas are followed by bold blackberry, plum and exotic spice. Despite the cooler vintage, you do feel the power and the textural richness that is often associated with this vineyard site. The wine ages in Slavonian oak cask for 30 months. Only 5,500 bottles were made.

Rather pungent herbal aromas on the nose here, which doesn’t mix well with the savoury fruit and slight acetic character. Very tight tannins. All a bit skew-whiff. (RH)

Serralunga d’Alba. Tasted blind. Lustrous ruby with orange tinges. Sweet crushed cherry and cherry stones with a suggestion of leather. Mouth-filling cherry fruit but not heavy at all. There is a medium-bodied feel to this. Supple finish with crunchy tannins. Perhaps not super-complex but well made. (WS)

Rose petal, dried cherry, kirsch, mint, sage and licorice give the 2014 Barolo Margheria much of its beguiling, nuanced personality. Deceptive in its midweight structure, it packs a serious punch. The sinewy, potent Serralunga tannins need time to soften a bit, but I don't think that will be an issue given how impeccably balanced the 2014 is in the early going. A bit of air brings out the wine's explosive persistence and drive. A closing flourish of sage, tobacco and kirsch rounds things out in style. The only open question is how much time the 2014 needs, because it is clearly a gorgeous wine in the making.
