Tasting notes
The blockbuster 2001 Dalmau boasts a saturated dark ruby/purple color in addition to a gorgeous nose of melted licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis, and subtle wood. Medium to full-bodied, with stunning concentration, purity, and texture, this beauty is a superb example of a modern-styled Rioja with one foot in the traditions of the past, and one in the future. It should evolve gracefully over the next 12-15+ years. Bravo! Importer: Paramount Brands, Port Chester, NY; tel. (914) 937-5007

A wine to keep an eye out for is the 2001 Dalmau (Vendimia Magna). Made from 100% Tempranillo (from a parcel on the Castillo Ygay estate) and aged seven months in highly toasted French oak barrels, there are only 250 cases of this debut vintage (a mere 50 cases for the USA market). There is great fruit, opulence, and thickness as well as loads of blackberry and cassis fruit offered in a modern, international, yet impressive style. It should drink well young yet last for 10-15 years. Importer: William Grant & Sons, Edison, NJ; tel. (732) 225-9000
