Score 91/100 · Drink 2024-2030, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous, Jan 2024

The classy 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes blends 90% of Grenache, with the remainder equally split between Mourvèdre and Syrah. Aging took place for ten months in new and second-fill French oak barriques, followed by another year in foudres . Swirling the glass unlocks crushed rose petals, strawberry jam and cedar. Spicy and minty subtleties add more aromatic layers. Medium to full-bodied and framed by a smooth tannic structure, this 2020 red has enough substance to benefit from a few years in bottle. Production totaled 6,500 bottles.

A showstopper, the 2020 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes plays with the top wines in the vintage, offering a brilliant array of red and blue fruits, flowers, incense, and chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied and perfectly balanced, with fine tannins and a great, great finish, it's going to evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. If you see a bottle, don't miss it!

90% 60- to 100-year-old Grenache, 5% 40-year-old Syrah, 5% 60- to 100-year-old Mourvèdre from Pied-Gü, Les Teyssonnières, La Boussière, Les Dentelles and Le Cayron. 75% whole bunch. Aged for 10 months in one- and two-year-old barrels then 12 months in foudre. To be released early summer 2022. Cask sample. Very dark blackish purple. Very ripe and rich but with real life to it. Sweet and spicy and then with pretty marked dry tannins. Very embryonic indeed. Almost wild in its gaminess. (JR)
