The 2018 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru is not quite as complex as Bitouzet-Prieur's Clos de Chênes on the nose. Still, it is well-defined with blackberry, raspberry and pressed violet scents. The palate is sweet on the entry, but not cloying, with slightly brittle tannins. A sharpness on the finish suggests acidification. It just fades too quickly on the finish, though it improves in the glass, coheres and gains more precision after 10-15 minutes. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

One third whole bunch. Just a hint of oak on the nose and much more austere on the nose and palate at this stage than the Champans but it will presumably strut its stuff eventually. (JR)
