2015 Allende

Tempranillo from the Briones area, with an average vine age of 45 years and planted at high density. Destemmed but not crushed. Skin maceration for 16 days. Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, with rackings every four months. Tasted blind. Allende is showing very well here – a modern Rioja that consistently features on top restaurant wine lists and is highly regarded by wine lovers. It is a pleasure to revisit it and see that the 2015 is drinking beautifully, arguably at an excellent moment, where primary aromas begin to intersect with early tertiary notes. Chocolate, coffee, cured leather and hints of truffle come through on the nose. The palate is creamy and smooth, with sweet-edged, fully integrated tannins. Generous fruit expression is balanced by earthy nuances, creating a well-judged combination of styles. Excellent value for money and a reliable go-to bottle. GV (FC)
