Score 87-89/100 · Drink 1997-2007, Robert Parker, Oct 1997
I was super-impressed by the 1996 St.-Joseph Deschants. The intense flinty character that comes through in the white wine is also apparent in this smoky, floral, mineral-dominated red. The wine displays a Burgundian-like soft, plush texture, medium body, crisp acidity, and delicious black currant fruit with a touch of earth, smoke, and tar. It should drink well for a decade.

Good deep red. Boysenberry, leather and a musky note of raw berries; complicating notes of smoke, iron, flowers and mint. Juicy, penetrating and pure, with a lively violet flavor. Boasts good intensity, grip and length.
