Tasting notes
There's no doubting the complexity of the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape—it boasts notes that range from floral and minty to earthy and leathery, and from ripe plums and chocolate to licorice and clove—yet the varied aromas seem at cross purposes. The wine is full-bodied and silky in texture, but metallic notes notes take over and dull the finish. I'd drink this one young.

Deep bright-rimmed red. Spice- and mineral-accented aromas of ripe black raspberry and blueberry, along with white pepper and floral nuances. Plush red and dark berry flavors take on subtle game and earth accents as the wine opens up. Supple tannins give shape to the nicely persistent finish, which features lingering smoked meat and lavender qualities.
