Score 85-87/100 · Drink 2023-2028, Neal Martin, Dec 2020

From 75-year-old vines, the 2019 Bourgogne Rouge Cuvée Vieilles Vignes was cropped at around 20hl/ha, including 30% whole bunch and aged equally in regular and large barrels with 50% new oak. It has an intense bouquet of macerated red cherries, wild strawberry and vanilla-y notes. I thought the level of new wood might be too much, but it seems to be in sync. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry. Here I do find some wood tannins that detract from the potential delineation. Quite powerful on the finish, but this could have benefited from more elegance.
