Bright ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented red and blue fruits, incense and floral pastilles on the nose, joined by slowly emerging touches of vanilla and peppery spices. Sweet, broad black raspberry and boysenberry flavors show very good depth and vivacity thanks to a core of juicy acidity. Supple tannins provide shape and grip to the blue-fruit-driven finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity.

Bertaude, Bois Lauzon, Cabrières, Chapouin. pH 3.72, TA 3.2 g/l. 3% Cinsault, 2% Clairette, 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah. Destemmed. Vinified in stainless steel (80%) and cement (20%). Aged 15 months in foudre (35%), new barrels (6%), used barrels (24%) and stainless steel (35%). Tasted blind. Bright crimson. Pale rim. Heady. But then very severe tannins on the end – very drying. Some green. Not fun. (JR)

The entry level cuvee is the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape and it’s a medium-bodied, lightly textured and slightly simple effort that has charming notes of red fruits, dried Provencal garrigue and spice. It’s certainly well-made and will drink well for 5-7 years.
